New Student Checklist

Before you arrive:
  1. Activate your NetID and set up multi-factor authentication.
  2. Starting on June 24, 2024, incoming graduate students can register for fall courses. Please register for 8 credits in the research course, Chem 990, section 001, before you arrive on campus.
  3. Complete work authorization You will receive an email from HireRight, complete the online portion, then set up a meeting with Marc Willadsen to show your forms of ID. List of Acceptable I9 Documents.
  4. Complete the online Criminal Background Check authorization by HireRight (emails to follow)
  5. Sign up for eRefund through the Bursar’s Office for the Welcome Check: eRefund Instructions
  6. Explore your benefits options:

    2. Benefits Summary
    3. Attend graduate benefits seminar.
  7. Fill out GLACIER (For international students)
  8. You will receive an email from support@onlinetax.net and uwhradministration@ohr.wisc.edu regarding your status in the United States. You will need to fill out this GLACIER information to be taxed correctly.
  9. Fill out direct deposit and W4 forms online through your MyUW. You will not have access to these links until 7 days before your appointment start date. These links will take you to instructions on how to complete the forms:

When you arrive:

  1. Get your WisCard (149 Union South): You must wait one day after you register for classes to obtain your WisCard.
  2. Get your bus pass (333 East Campus Mall): Take your WisCard with you
  3. Explore your benefits options: Summary of Benefits
  4. Meet with Marc Willadsen to verify your I9 documents
  5. Pay Segregated Fees (check MyWisc account for due date) and other applicable fees. Do not pay tuition!

International Students

  1. Take all GLACIER forms to Suite 5101 at 21 N Park Street (For international students)
  2. Register with ISS (International Student Services) at 716 Landgon Street (Red Gym) (For international students)
  3. Bring all documents (I20, I94, Passport, Visa, Offer Letter)
  4. Register for the international student orientation
  5. Go to Social Security Office (6011 Odana Road, Madison, WI 53719) (For international students)
    1. You must wait 10 days after entering into United States to go there
    2. Bring all documents (I20, I94, Passport, Visa, Offer Letter)
    3. Once you receive your Social Security Card, you MUST update your GLACIER account
