Detailed PICture reveals how tooth enamel is strong enough to last a lifetime

PIC mapping, which measures biomineral crystal orientations and assigns different colors to different rotation angles, reveals that the crystals in tooth enamel are not perfectly aligned

Physicist Pupa Gilbert used PIC mapping to find that the way enamel crystals are misoriented likely deflects cracks, leading to teeth’s lifelong strength.
