Madison, WI – December 19, 2019– Each year, the Department of Chemistry chooses one outstanding staff or faculty member to honor with the James W. Taylor Excellence in Teaching Award. This year’s recipient, senior lecturer Paul Hooker, was selected for his exceptional contributions to teaching in the chemistry department.
Professor Hooker has been implementing an active learning and inclusive environment for his undergraduate General Chemistry classes since he arrived to the chemistry department in September 2014.
“The chemistry department is full of very talented individuals who share a passion for teaching,” says Hooker, “I am proud to be a part of this exceptional team, and thrilled to receive this award from a group of people for whom I have the utmost respect.”
Upon receiving this award, Professor Hooker will speak at the Taylor Teaching Award Symposium on Friday, reflecting on his 25 years of teaching across multiple generations. He will speak about his approach to teaching, what worked, what didn’t, and will offer wisdom as to how other educators could move forward with chemistry teaching in the future.
“We are ecstatic to give Paul this award,” says Judith Burstyn, chair of the Department of Chemistry, “he truly embodies the Wisconsin Idea and is a wonderful example of what teaching excellence looks like in our department.”
