Alumnus Yeng Her Becomes First Hmong-American to Earn M.D./Ph.D.

Yang Her is the first known Hmong-American M.D./Ph.D. recipientIn May 2017, Yeng Her (B.S. ’07) became the first known Hmong-American to earn an M.D./Ph.D. degree. He earned the degrees from Mayo Clinic in Rocester, Minn. As reported by the Wisconsin State Journal, his story begins in a Hmong refugee camp in Thailand. At the age of 10, Her and his family moved to Madison. He earned a bachelor’s in chemistry in 2007 then completed a postbaccalaureate program at Mayo Clinic. He spent eight years completing the dual doctor of medicine / doctor of philosophy program at Mayo Clinic.
