Professor Robert Hamers has been named Steenbock Professor of Physical Sciences at UW-Madison. Steenbock professorships were established through an endowed gift from the Harry and Evelyn Steenbock family, in order to support prestigious professorships in the natural sciences. Hamers also recently received a Wisconsin Distinguished Professorship, supported by UW System.
Hamers and his research group explore surface and interface chemistry, especially interfaces between inorganic materials and organic/biological molecules. Much of their work revolves around the science of energy, including energy storage, solar cells, and using light to speed up chemical reactions.
