The UW-Madison Department of Chemistry has had a long tradition of annually inviting an accomplished young chemist to spend a semester in the department as a visiting professor. These chemists are often from Europe. In 1999, this program was endowed by a generous gift from Margaret L. Goering, wife of former UW-Madison chemistry Professor Harlan Goering. Visiting chemists are now designated Margaret L. and Harlan L. Goering Visiting Professors in Organic Chemistry.
