Title: Noticing and nudging students’ approach to learning chemistry
Abstract: When our students are having trouble learning a key concept or problem-solving strategy, our natural response as instructors is to help them learn the concept or strategy. Sometimes, however, the underlying issue isn’t a particular concept; it’s students’ approach to learning chemistry more generally, as memorizing facts and problem-solving recipes rather than pursuing a deeper conceptual understanding. In this short course, we’ll focus on techniques for noticing and addressing students’ approaches to learning and on incentivizing students to pursue a deeper understanding.
