“Accessing new metal-metal interactions: elucidating the electronic structure of f and heavy main-group metal systems”
The heaviest elements on the Periodic Table challenge our chemical intuition with regards to their behavior. To harness this unique chemistry, it is vital to develop detailed methods of probing electronic structure that capture the subtle differences underlying the distinct properties in these systems. In this talk, I will describe my use of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy to reveal electronic structure signatures in f-element intermetallic materials and direct the synthesis of new actinide heterometallic molecular systems. In addition, I will discuss my combined computational and experimental approach to discover new heavy main-group intermetallic systems at high pressures that engender magnetic and topologically non-trivial behavior. Together, these efforts expand understanding of the chemical behavior of heavy elements under extreme conditions.
