IMPLEMENTING A NOVEL CURRICULUM: CHALLENGES AND LESSONS LEARNED FROM INITIAL PROPAGATION

Woman in green cardigan and black shirt smilingAn alternative general chemistry curriculum (Chemistry, Life, the Universe and Everything – CLUE) was developed based on knowledge of how students learn and evidence of student difficulties. The curriculum has now been implemented in a range of classroom environments (400+ classroom with recitation, 100+ classroom without recitation, and 170+ active learning classroom) and multiple studies have been conducted to measure the impact on student understanding within these diverse classroom environments. Within the last few years an additional eight institutions have implemented this curriculum for the first time. Through planning and professional development meetings with their faculty, a better understanding of how curriculum can be adapted for additional institutions was gathered. The efficacy of this curriculum and lessons learned from these initial implementations will be presented.
