The Theoretical Chemistry Institute (TCI) is housed within Physical Chemistry at the UW-Madison and comprises the department's theoretical chemists. Students affiliated with theoretical chemistry ordinarily work toward doctorates in physical chemistry, in an environment that emphasizes interactions among all theoretical research groups and faculty members. Shared facilities include the TCI Library (which houses an outstanding collection of theoretical monographs and principal research journals), seminar and conference rooms, and computational resources. We interact closely with other groups having primarily experimental interests that strongly enhance the environment for theoretical research. Each year, we awards the internationally recognized Hirschfelder Prize in Theoretical Chemistry. The prize-winner spends a week visiting the department and presents three lectures during his or her stay. We also have an active visitor program and seminar series, which funds visits by theorists from around the world.
