Organic Requirements

Ph.D. Requirements: Organic Chemistry

First Year

  • Advisory exams
  • Take required Organic major courses (Chem. 641, 841, 843)
    • (Nearly all students also take Chem. 626 and Chem. 605)
  • Begin accumulating minor credits; complete minor courses, if possible
  • Enroll in and attend Organic Seminars (Chemistry 940)
  • Join a research group by Nov. 15
  • Begin Research (Chemistry 990)

Second Year

  • Continue research
  • Enroll in and attend Organic Seminars (Chemistry 940)
  • Finish required coursework, if needed
  • File Minor Agreement form (Obtain from Chemistry Graduate Office and submit halfway through coursework.)
  • Submit Second Year Research Report (due Sept. 1 -- end of second year)
  • Present Seminar in second or third year

Third Year

  • Continue research
  • Enroll in and attend Organic Seminars (Chemistry 940)
  • Defend Second Year Research Report
  • Present seminar (literature topic) if not yet completed
  • Research proposal (due in December or April)
  • File Request for Preliminary Warrant in order to request dissertator status. (Obtain from Chemistry Graduate Office and submit one month prior to defense.)

Fourth (and Subsequent) Year(s)

  • Continue research
  • Enroll in and attend Organic Seminars (Chemistry 940)
  • Write and defend Ph.D. thesis
  • File Ph.D. Final Oral Committee Approval form (Obtain from Chemistry Graduate Office and submit one month prior to oral exam.)
